In addition to communications consulting, I support Key of She Jazz as the managing director. Founded by my daughter, professional saxophonist Olivia Hughart, Key of She Jazz has evolved into a nonprofit organization that supports under-represented girls and young women in jazz, from middle school through college and beyond. As a middle schooler just starting in jazz, Olivia realized she was one of only a couple of girls in the jazz band. With a friend and with the band director's help, she brought together girls in jazz from all schools in the district. Key of She Jazz was born!
That was only the beginning, and Key of She Jazz has since presented several successful live conferences as well as numerous virtual events, engaging students, parents, educators, and other musicians from the Philadelphia area but also around the globe. We are now a standalone nonprofit 501(c)3 organization and fundraise year-round to support our events and to be able to bring in premier women in jazz to inspire audiences.
Our events are always free so that there are no barriers to attendance. We uniquely bring together not only girls in jazz, but their peers in the band as well as a broad community of supporters (fellow musicians, band directors, parents, enthusiasts) who want to see girls in jazz succeed. As Olivia has said, "Girls need to see other girls and women on stage and performing so they can believe they can do it too. Representation matters!"
You can help us pursue that mission! Click to donate to Key of She Jazz.
